The hunt continues

I don't like to think of myself as obsessive, but I am wondering if that's true when it comes to finding Hampshire writers or writing about Hampshire or even just novels set in Hampshire. At the library on Tuesday, I had to refrain from over-vigorous fist-pumping and cheering when by chance I picked up "Never Say Never" by Elizabeth Waite, flicked to the first page, and saw "Part One, North Waltham, Hampshire, 1930". A similar refrain of "YES!" accompanied my perusal of Minette Walters "The Tinderbox", also set in the fictional Hampshire village of Sowerbridge; this felt like less of a lucky find, as I was already aware that Ms Walters had lived in Hampshire before crossing the border into Dorset. As for whether these books draw inspiration from Hampshire or are merely a convenient shorthand for "rural, conservative, narrow-minded", I have yet to decide but I am enjoying the warm glow and sense of achievement in finding them.

And, at least, I've stopped waking up at 3 a.m. trying to figure out who else I can track down . . .
