The Arsenic Labyrinth by Martin Edwards Find!

One of a series of crime novels set in the Lake District and featuring academic historian Daniel Kind and professional detective Hannah Scarlett in an arms length romantic dance. In true Miss Marple tradition, the amateur helps the professional to solve the crime(s).This is one of a series of Lake District mysteries by this author, the latest being the Serpent Pool which is due out in 2010.

In a previous book 'The Coffin trail' Daniel has relocated to the remote Lake District with his (incredibly annoying) partner Miranda. Thankfully she pushes off in this book leaving him free perhaps to pursue Hannah if something were to happen to her partner. Rural life was just too quiet.

Meanwhile there are murders both ancient and modern around the fictional arsenic labyrinth. This is a readable crime novel with local colour and some fine twists in the tail. The author depicts a lovely coffee shop in Kendal which I wish really existed. However, Charlies cafe bar is very good if anyone is in that town. You probably won't bump into Daniel or Hannah but they do a great cappucino.
